WINDSOR—Windsor Town Council during its Tuesday meeting voted to pay $375,000 for a vacant home on .7 acres for its police station.

The property at 56 E. Windsor Blvd. is next to five acres the town bought last year for $1 million for a new town hall, and possibly community center and library.

“We had been saving money, and there will be no need to raise taxes (to cover the cost),” Mayor Carita Richardson said.

Councilman N. Macon Edwards favors the plan.

“We need to provide a space for the police. They’ve outgrown the one in the town office,” Edwards said. “And we own the land bought about a year ago behind the residence. It would add to our facility if we ever build.”

Town officials also determined it would be cheaper to buy than rent, Richardson said.

“We have a pressing need for a police station,” she said. “We were looking at building one, but that would take up to a year. It’s a really good location for a police station. It’s in front and adjacent to land we have.”

Some renovations will be needed, including making the home handicapped accessible.

Councilmen J. Clint Bryant and Durwood Scott did not vote due to a conflict of interest. The property is listed with Scott’s real estate agency, and Bryant has his real estate license.
