COURTLAND—Four Franklin wrestlers were perfect on the night as the Broncos defeated Northampton 24-23 and host Southampton High 52-29 on Tuesday.

Going 2-0 for Franklin were junior Cheyenne Banks in the 106-pound weight class, senior Nathan Jones in 160, senior Zack Hopkins in 195 and sophomore heavyweight Anthony Lott-Davis.

Going 1-1 were Franklin senior Xavier Freeman in the 138-pound weight class and teammate sophomore Shane Walker in 170. Sophomore Khiry Reese went 1-0 in 182.

Northampton forfeited some matches due to illness.

“Forfeits were the difference in the match,” said Bronco Coach Bull Johnson. “That helped us.”

Johnson says his team is ready for the regional tournament on Feb. 8 and 9.

“They’ve been working hard,” he said. “Everyone is making weight and everyone’s grades are good. That’s a good thing. We’re in good shape.”

Southampton beat Northampton 54-30.

“The boys wrestled well,” said Southampton Coach Buddy Whitehurst. “We just had a few wrestlers that were out due to illness, and the younger guys had to step in. They did a good job, but Franklin’s veteran wrestlers were just a little too strong.”

Franklin will participate in the Mathews Duals at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, and host its final home match at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, with Sussex and Hertford County.
