NEWSOMS—Three people were arrested at noon Monday for attempting to steal a 1970s Ford pickup from Mary Hunt Road in Newsoms, the Southampton County Sheriff’s Office reported.

Charged with trespassing and grand larceny were Charles Wellington, 47, and Alvin Spruill, 23, both of Franklin; and Melvina Cross, 38, of Courtland.

The sheriff’s office got a call concerning trespassers and found the trio attempting to steal the truck, said Major Gene Drewery.

All are free on bond.
