ISLE OF WIGHT—Isle of Wight County Public Schools will lose $1.1 million as it prepares for a 5 percent cut in funding from the county for its 2013-14 budget.

The school district is looking at a $54.4 million budget, which would require a $27.6 million in local funding.

Superintendent Katrise Perera will recommend cuts while presenting her proposed budget during community meetings in March.

Some jobs may be eliminated, but Perera hopes that can be done by not filling vacancies left from retirements and resignations. Early retirement incentive packages are being offered to teachers who qualify.

In related matters, Gov. Bob McDonnell has proposed 2 percent raises for school employees. Bradshaw estimates that will cost the county $945,000.
