FRANKLIN—A Franklin man was arrested for burglarizing a home and attempting to sell the stolen goods to a store in Franklin, the Southampton County Sheriff’s Office reported.

Damien Butts, 19, broke into the home at Askew Street in Southampton Meadows Mobile Home Park on Route 258 at 10:15 p.m. Wednesday, said Major Gene Drewery. Butts stole jewelry and change valued at $580, Drewery said.

Deputies were alerted to the alleged break-in through an alarm system and met the owner at the home. Deputies found a bathroom window had been broken out.

The investigating officer contacted area businesses to be on the lookout for anyone selling jewelry and gave each a description of the stolen items.

One of the business owners on Thursday contacted the sheriff’s office when Butts attempted to sell the jewelry, Drewery said. Police arrested Butts at the store and the jewelry was recovered.

He was charged with burglary and grand larceny and released on $1000bond.
