The horror of a Franklin woman allegedly being raped after attending a New Year’s Eve church service resonates strongly.

The police reported that the 55-year-old was walking home at 2 a.m. Tuesday from First Baptist Church on Hall Street. She had only a Bible in her possession when a black man held a gun to hear head and allegedly attempted to rob her before raping her near Armory Drive and Gardener Street.

Police have indicated the victim did not know her attacker.

That’s not the norm.

According the Rape, Abuse and Incest Information Network, two-thirds of sexual assault victims know their attackers; 38 percent of rapists are a friend or acquaintance.

This leads us to believe a predator is on the loose. That’s something that’s sure to concern residents.

Police have assured us they are making this investigation a top priority.

In this case, the area where the rape occurred has a volunteer neighborhood watch group in place. We recommend that the Berkley Neighborhood Watch Group continue its efforts. Residents need to beware of and contact police about any suspicious activity.
