WAKEFIELD—Tidewater Academy senior Hunter Haywood scored 24 points in the Warriors’ 69-45 win over Windsor in a non-conference game Wednesday.
“We played extremely well for the first game back after the break,” said TA Coach Walter Westbrook. “We had a really good game especially on offense; defensively I would have liked to have had more rebounds.”
When the teams met on Dec. 14, Windsor junior Justice Chapman hit a 3-pointer late in the game to help defeat Tidewater 42-41.
“We lost by one at their place, last night we had everyone back and won by 24,” Westbrook added.
The Warriors improved to 7-4 overall, while the Dukes dropped to 3-4 overall.
“Last night’s game was the most important game because it was the game we were playing,” Westbrook said. “We never look back in any type of revenge; we just play one game at a time.”
Other leaders for the winners were senior Marquel Saunders scoring 17points and junior Elante Drew adding 13.
Sophomore Malcolm Greene led the Dukes with 10 points.
The Warriors will host Fuqua School at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4, for a Virginia Commonwealth Conference match-up.
Westbrook hopes his team will be able slow the tempo of the game down noting Fuqua is an up-tempo team.
“It is going to be a tough game,” he said. “They are very good team. One of the top teams in the VCC if not in the state.”
The Dukes will travel to Sussex Central at 7 p.m. Friday for a Tri-Rivers District game.
