January

Jan. 11: Nathan Sivertson’s 20 points and 11 rebounds helped Isle of Wight Academy beat Alliance Christian 60-44.

Jan. 13: The Franklin High Broncos got another big district win on the road, beating Windsor 69-51 in a Tri-Rivers District boys’ basketball game.

Jan. 18: Three Southampton High School wrestlers went undefeated to lead the Indians to a second-place finish during the MBM Duals at Franklin High School on Saturday. Posting a 5-0 record were Saquan Fenner in the 120-pound class, Paul Long in 126-pound class and Devine Fenner in the 132-pound class.

Jan. 20: Franklin improved to 5-1 in the Tri-Rivers District with a 78-72 win over previously undefeated Charles City.

• The Isle of Wight Academy girls’ basketball team beat Walsingham Academy 33-21 to notch their third straight win.

Jan. 25: Windsor boys defeated Tri-Rivers District opponent Appomattox Regional Governor’s School 37-33. Windsor’s Josh Edwards hit two foul shots with 15 seconds left to put the Dukes up by three points.

• The Southampton Academy boys’ basketball beat Steward School 54-50 Friday to remain undefeated at home this season.

• Southampton High School junior De’Mone Brickhouse helped lead the Lady Indians to a 44-42 Southside District win over Prince Edward with 16 points on Friday.

• Franklin senior Emmanuel Ricks was named the Northumberland Tourney’s most valuable player after going 5-0 on Saturday. Wrestling in the 195-pound class, Ricks had four pins and one decision.

Jan. 27: The Isle of Wight Academy boys’ out-rebounded conference foe Denbigh Baptist Christian 51-17 in the Chargers’ 77-30 drubbing of the visiting Minutemen on Tuesday. Sophomore Austin Rogers led all scorers with 15 points and Hunter Triplett scored 11 in the win.

Jan. 29: The Tidewater Academy girls took a 42-27 non-conference win Tuesday over host Windsor High School. Cary Beahm led all scorers with 15 points and six rebounds.

• Lamont Moore scored 22 points to help Tidewater Academy to a 47-39 win Tuesday against Norfolk Academy.

 

February

Feb. 1: Franklin on Friday qualified for the region playoffs after defeating visiting Appomattox Regional Governor’s School 52-34. The win was the Broncos’ sixth in a row.

Senior Nick Doyle’s 21 points led Southampton High School to a 74-71 non-conference, overtime win over Sussex Central on Monday.

• Cary Beahm’s 17 points and 11 rebounds helped Tidewater Academy beat Southampton Academy 32-25 Monday night.

Feb. 3: Lamont Moore’s 24 points help to lift Tidewater Academy in a 50-24 over Virginia Commonwealth Conference rival Southampton Academy in a defensive struggle Tuesday night.

Feb. 5: Southampton Academy girls moved to 11-4 overall after a 37-30 win over conference foe Kenston Forest Thursday. Rachel Holland scored 15 points and Barclay Gatten added seven.

Feb. 8: The Franklin boys improved to 12-4 overall and 8-2 in the Tri-Rivers District after defeating visiting Windsor 57-42. Senior guard Jalen Vincent had a game-high 16 points for the host Broncos while teammate Tyshaun Lowe made 14 points and 15 rebounds.

Six Southampton High School wrestlers qualified for the region tournament.

Feb. 10: Isle of Wight Academy senior quarterback Ben Epps wants his friends and family to watch him play college football. The Surry native signed to play with Christopher Newport University in Newport News.

• The Isle of Wight Academy Chargers moved to 16-6 on the year Wednesday night with a 72-53 win over Northeast Academy out of Lasker, N.C.

• The Tidewater Academy boys’ basketball team improved to 15-6 overall with a 66-27 win over Brunswick Academy Friday.

Hunter Haywood led with 19 points in the win.

Feb. 12: The Southampton Academy girls’ basketball team locked up at least third place in the Virginia Commonwealth Conference with a 34-31 win over Brunswick Academy Thursday.

Feb. 15: Southampton Academy sophomore Tonee Hill scored 23 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to help the Raiders win 79-54 over Brunswick Academy snapping a four-game losing streak and secure a spot in the Virginia Commonwealth Conference tournament.

Feb. 17: The Isle of Wight Academy boys’ basketball team improved its record to 18-6 overall with a 69-31 drubbing of Alliance Christian on senior night Tuesday.

• Lifted by career highs in points from seniors Lamont Moore and BJ Morris, Tidewater Academy moved into second place in the Virginia Commonwealth Conference with an 84-69 win over Fuqua School.

Feb. 19: Western Tidewater athletic directors agree that a proposed realignment from three to six classifications for Virginia High School League schools would lead to more fair competition.

• Double-doubles by teammates Cary Beahm and Falon Williams helped lead Tidewater Academy to a 52-47 win over Blessed Sacrament-Huguenot in its last regular season game Thursday night.

Feb. 22: Southampton High School senior Nick Doyle for a third time was named to the Southside District First Team. 2011’s district Player of the Year, Doyle averaged 17 points per game this season, 5.8 assists, 3.9 rebounds and 1.8 steals.

• The Isle of Wight Academy girls finished the regular season with a 40-34 victory over Hampton Christian Friday.

• Franklin wrestler Emmanuel Ricks placed seventh in the 195-pound class during the Virginia High School League State Wrestling Championships at the Salem Civic Center on Friday and Saturday.

Feb. 24: Rachel Holland’s 22 points led Southampton Academy to a 45-33 win over Fuqua School in the first round of the Virginia Commonwealth Conference Tournament

• The Franklin Broncos’ bid for a Sweet 16 berth in the Virginia High School League Division 1 boys’ basketball playoffs came up a point short after a frantic comeback against West Point in the Region A quarterfinals losing 60-59.

Feb. 26: The Isle of Wight Academy boys’ basketball team rode clutch free-throw shooting to a 65-61 double-overtime victory against Portsmouth Christian in the first round of the Metro Athletic Conference Tournament.

Feb. 29: The Tidewater Academy boys will host Hampton Christian in the first round of the Virginia Independent Schools’ Athletic Association state tournament.

• The Tidewater Academy girls’ basketball team will host Roanoke Catholic in the first round of the Virginia Independent Schools’ Athletic Association state tournament.

 

March

Mar. 2: Lamont Moore filled up the stat sheet for the Tidewater Academy boys’ basketball team in a 60-54 loss to No. 2-ranked Evangel Christian in the quarterfinals of the Virginia Independent Schools Division III state tournament.

• The Tidewater Academy girls’ basketball team was eliminated from the Virginia Independent Schools Association Division III state tournament with a 74-38 quarterfinal loss to No. 2-ranked Amelia Academy.

Mar. 9: The Golden Eagles defeated the second-ranked Tar Heels 26-8 to win the 2012 title for elementary teams for the Franklin Parks & Recreation play.

Mar. 14: The Southampton Academy Raiders baseball team opened the regular season with a 4-1 win over Alliance Christian School.

• A fourth-inning rally combined with nine stolen bases led Southampton Academy to an 8-1 season opening win over Ridge Cross on Monday at home.

Lady Raider senior Chelsea Speight pitched a two-hitter and struck out 10 batters.

Mar. 16: A 12-year-old Southampton County boy bowled a perfect game during a no-tap, Pre-Pro Am Tournament at Franklin Bowling Center on Sunday. William Newsom picked up 10 true strikes and two 9-pin sets, which are considered strikes in a no-tap tournament.

• Southampton High School scored four first-half goals to defeat Franklin 4-2 in a non-league season opener on Tuesday.

Mar. 18: The Southampton Academy girls’ tennis team defeated Virginia Commonwealth Conference foe Fuqua School 7-2 Thursday.

Isle of Wight Academy senior Evan Chappell knocked in three runs with a fourth-inning double to help lead the Chargers to a 15-7 non-district win over Norfolk Christian on Thursday.

• Southampton Academy took Fuqua batters down in order during the last four innings of Thursday’s softball game and came home with a 6-4 Virginia Commonwealth Conference game.

Mar. 21: Southampton High School senior Ashlee Buehner gave up one hit and faced only two more hitters than the minimum in a 10-0 win for Southampton over Windsor in Courtland on Monday.

• Isle of Wight Academy Junior Shelby Jurewicz pitched her first high school no-hitter for a 15-0 win over Metro Athletic Conference foe Portsmouth Christian on Friday.

Mar. 23: A multi-sport athlete at Franklin High School, Jennifer Sing has taken her athletic prowess to new heights. Sing, a senior at Virginia Military Institute, capped off her indoor pole vault career with a Big South Conference record jump of 12 feet, 10 inches and a third-place finish at the East Coast Athletic Championships in Boston.

• Isle of Wight Academy rode hot hitting to defeat Bishop Sullivan Catholic 8-2. Logan Wright (1-0) limited the Crusaders to three hits, allowing two runs and striking out nine. The Chargers improved to 4-1.

• Windsor’s Mack Turner and Evan Binkley scored four goals each in a 12-0 win over Southampton Academy Tuesday. Ryan Brant, Racquel Doherty, Eli Trantham and Gavin Dale each scored a goal as well in the win.

Mar. 25: Southampton Academy beat Surry 7-6 Thursday, despite the Cougars’ late rally in the non-conference game. SA’s Matt Nixon and Carson Camp got on base off singles in the first inning and scored.

Mar. 28: Hunter Triplett was four-for-five with two RBIs as the Isle of Wight Academy baseball team closed out Hampton Christian 20-7. The Chargers’ leadoff man hits three singles and a double, and scored four runs as IWA ran its record to 6-2 and 2-0 in the Metro Athletic Conference.

• Windsor girls’ tennis team defeated guest Northampton 5-4 on Thursday. In singles play, Taylor Ferguson, Karin Dulai and Mackenzie Patrick posted wins for the Lady Dukes.

• Junior Tidewater Academy softball pitcher Falon Williams struck out 11 batters and gave up three hits in a 9-0 win over Portsmouth Christian. Williams also hit a triple and scored two runs.

Mar. 30: For a second time this season, the Southampton High School boys’ tennis team defeated Franklin. The host Broncos fell 6-3 in the non-conference match. The Indians were 5-1 in singles and 1-2 in doubles.

• Franklin soccer players gave Coach Brandon Ivey a “five-gallon water bath” after defeating Brunswick -3-0 for the first time in five years.

• The Southampton Academy baseball team pulled out a 4-3 win over Virginia Commonwealth Conference rival Tidewater Academy.

• The Southampton Academy softball team beat Virginia Commonwealth Conference foe Tidewater Academy 7-6 Tuesday to remain unbeaten. Senior pitcher Chelsea Speight struck out six batters, walked two and gave up five earned runs in route to the win that puts SA at 5-0 on the year.

 

April

Apr 1: Franklin’s 4X100-meter relay team of Travis Brown, JaVonte’ Blacknall, Reshard Sumblin and Latrell Lane qualified for the Region A meet after placing second at Greensville. The Bronco team qualified with a time of 45.38.

• Southampton Academy senior Chelsea Speight won her sixth straight game during a 10-0 win over Richmond Christian.

• Southampton High School freshman Cortney Greene pitched a one-hitter in a 12-0 Southside District win over Greensville.

• Southampton High School’s Zach Vann gave up three hits in six innings during the Indians’ 8-1 victory over Greensville on Thursday.

• Windsor sophomore Sherod Patterson’s hit to right center with two outs at the bottom of the seventh inning brought home Ernie Jump for the Duke’s game-winning run. Windsor defeated Nansemond Suffolk Academy 8-7.

Apr 4: Southampton High School sophomore pitcher Tanner Winters threw a no-hitter during a 20-0 baseball rout of Franklin.

• The Southampton Storm 12-and-under girls’ softball team placed second in the Silver Bracket at the 2012 Softball Nation Tidewater Opener in Virginia Beach.

Apr 6: Two-time Atlantic 10 Conference Midfielder of the Year Mary Flowers, a Southampton County native and standout lacrosse player at the University of Richmond, was named to the 2012 Tewaaraton Watch List.

• Sophomore Madison Cabell went 3-3 with a pair of RBI’s and a run scored to lead the undefeated Southampton Lady Indians to a huge 3-2 Southside District win over visiting Park View.

Apr 8: The Southampton Academy baseball team rode the arm of Jacob Holland to a 6-1 victory over Brunswick Academy. Holland pitched a complete-game four-hitter, striking out seven.

Apr 11: Local high school basketball journeyman Will Doyle has found a home at Penn State Harrisburg.

• The Southampton Storm 14U placed second in the Gold Bracket at the 2012 Softball Nation Easter Special at Harry Daniel Park at Ironbridge in Richmond.

Apr 18: Freshman Carson Saunders hit the game-winning RBI in extra innings to help lead Isle of Wight Academy girls’ softball team to an 8-7 win over Metro Conference foe Broadwater Academy.

• The Southampton Academy baseball team won the Hobgood Easter Invitational Tournament championship over Rocky Mount Academy.

• Ahead by two at the half, the Southampton High School soccer team held on for a 9-1 Southside District win over host Greensville.

• Senior Taylor Gomer pitched five scoreless innings as the Isle of Wight Academy baseball team cruised by Broadwater Academy 17-0.

• Southampton Academy pitcher Chelsea Speight struck out eight and gave up two hits for the Lady Raiders to secure a 12-1 win.

• Southampton High School’s boys’ tennis team defeated host Greensville 9-0 during the Indians’ first Southside District match.

Apr 20: Isle of Wight Academy’s Hunter Triplett hit three doubles for four RBIs and scored three runs to lead the Chargers to a 21-2, five-inning win over Kenston Forest.

• Nine Windsor students won their events to lead the girls’ and boys’ track teams to first-place finishes during a meet in Charles City on Tuesday. Franklin’s Travis Brown was a double winner, taking first in the 100-meter dash at 11.14 and 200-meter dash at 23.34.

• Southampton used 15 hits and six walks to plate 16 runs in a mercy rule, shortened Southside District game, defeating Brunswick 16-2. The Lady Indians improved to 7-0

• Daniel Lowdermilk took two firsts during Southampton High School’s Tuesday track meet at Prince Edward High School in Farmville.

• Southampton High School’s Tanner Winters picked up his second win of the year while giving up three hits and one earned run during a 12-4 victory over visiting Brunswick

• Isle of Wight Academy pitchers Bailey Key and Hailey Glover combined for a no-hitter in a 12-0 non-conference win over Windsor High School.

• The Southampton Academy tennis team defeated Tidewater Academy 6-3 at Cypress Cove Country Club.

Apr 22: Prince Edward took advantage of seven walks, two hit batters, two errors ad mental mistakes to hand Southampton High School’s softball team its first loss of the season. The score was 6-5.

• The Tidewater Academy baseball team beat Alliance Christian 10-2 in a non-conference game Thursday for its fifth win in a row.

• Senior goalie Thomas Taylor had 14 saves in Southampton Academy’s 4-0 loss to Isle of Wight Academy.

Apr 25: Courtland Youth Athletic Association on Saturday broke ground for a new softball-baseball complex on Highway 35 near Sebrell.

• The Child Abuse Prevention Golf Tournament was held at Nansemond River Golf Course. Coordinated by Joyner Gray Yale Ruritan Club, the event raised money and brought awareness to child abuse and neglect.

• Southampton Academy pitcher Wesley Barnes’ no-hitter helped the Raiders trounce First Baptist Christian 16-0.

Apr 27: Franklin junior Xavier Freeman is out for the season after breaking his hip during a soccer game against Windsor. “It was a very, very, very physical game,” Franklin Coach Brandon Ivey said.

• Windsor’s Jordan Jones’ three wins and Leah Dreps’ two led the Lady Dukes to a first-place finish during a Tri-Rivers District track meet.

• Windsor’s baseball team opened Tri-River’s District play with a 7-5 win over Surry.

Apr 29: Southampton High School senior Nick Doyle has signed a partial scholarship to play basketball at Delaware State University.

• Southampton Academy senior goalkeeper Thomas Taylor made a record-breaking 24 saves during the soccer team’s 2-1 loss to visiting Blessed Sacrament Huguenot.

• Southampton Academy’s Barclay Gatten finished the regular tennis season undefeated after beating Blessed Sacrament Huguenot’s top player 6-3 at Cypress Cove Country Club.

• Franklin’s Tevin Sumblin, JaQuan Heath, Scott Davis and Michael Edwards had two hits each during the Broncos’ 10-9 loss to Tri-River District foe Charles City.

• Southampton Academy pitcher Tonee Hill allowed four hits and struck out 10 in the Raiders’ 7-0 win over Kenston Forest.

 

May

May 2: Southampton High School senior Jarvis Tucker has received a scholarship to play at Virginia State University in Petersburg.

• Dillon Hasty record his second win of the season Monday as Southampton High School defeated Sussex 11-1 in six innings.

• An inside-the-park grand slam by Southampton High School’s Marisa Cabell in the second inning highlighted the Lady Indians’ 11-1 win over Sussex Central.

• Windsor’s Josh Edwards’ two wins led the Dukes to a first-place finish during Bob Murray Invitational at King William High School.

May 4: A shortened, three-inning game kept Isle of Wight Academy pitcher Bailey Key from a perfect game against Williamsburg Christian.

• The SA Tennis team wrapped up their season by placing fourth at the Virginia Commonwealth Conference tournament held at the McCormack-Nagelson Tennis Center.

• The Southampton Storm 14U team won the Softball Nation Towe Tussle tournament in Charlottesville.

• Three Franklin High School athletes won their events during aTri-Rivers District track meet in Surry. Janesha Hurdle and Reshard Sumblin won the shot put for the Broncos, and Latrell Lane took first in the 100-meter dash.

• Southampton Academy’s Matt Nixon went 4-for-4 in a 12-1 win over First Baptist Christian. Nixon scored twice and produced one RBI.

• With one game to go, Southampton Academy goalie Thomas Taylor broke a regular season school record with 125 saves.

• The Southampton High School softball team took sole possession of first place in the Southside District after defeating Park View 11-1.

• Southampton High School boys’ tennis team defeated Greenville 8-1 on Wednesday and lost 9-0 to undefeated Prince Edward.

May 6: Isle of Wight Academy eighth-grader Justin Cobb scored three goals during the Chargers’ 6-5 win over Metro Conference foe Blessed Sacrament Huguenot.

• The Franklin boys’ tennis team got its first win of the season with a 6-3 victory over visiting Tri-Rivers District foe Surry.

• The Franklin High School girls’ tennis team defeated Surry 7-2 during a Tri-Rivers District match.

• Isle of Wight Academy’s softball team won the Metro Conference title, defeating Broadwater Academy 9-2.

Southampton High School’s Jannes Bergmann scored three goals during the Indians’ 8-2 win over Southside District opponent Greensville.

• Three Southampton High School students won their events during a track meet against Greensville. Kirstyn Andrew won the 800-meter run; Jarvis Tucker, the shot put; and Saquan Fenner, the long jump.

May 9: Southampton Academy graduate Michalann Camp was the lone Randolph-Macon College softball player named to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference All-Tournament team.

• Isle of Wight Academy won its final game of the season to earn second seed in the Virginia Commonwealth Conference tournament.

• Southampton High School goalie David Strozier made 12 saves during the Indians’ 9-1 Southside District loss to Park View.

May 11: Southampton Academy’s Chelsea Speight gave up one hit and struck out two in the Lady Raiders’ 16-0 win over Richmond Christian in the quarterfinals of the Virginia Commonwealth Conference tournament.

• The Southampton High School baseball team improved to 12-1 overall and 7-1 in the Southside District after defeating Prince Edward 11-1 in six innings.

• In four innings Tuesday, Southampton High School’s softball team scored 12 runs while hitting .500 to avenge Prince Edward for its only loss this season.

• In a game with two inside-the-park home runs, it was pitcher Falon Williams, with nine strikeouts, who stood out in a 9-3 win over Fuqua in the quarterfinals of the Virginia Commonwealth Conference tournament.

May 13: The Isle of Wight Academy soccer finished second in the Virginia Commonwealth Conference tournament with a 4-1 loss to Kenston Forest in the championship game.

May 18: A senior Windsor soccer player has shattered a 20-year-old state record for hat tricks during a varsity career. Ryan Brant made his 11th hat trick — scoring three goals in one game — during the Dukes’ 6-1 win over Tri-Rivers District opponent Franklin.

• Windsor’s Josh Edwards won the high jump and Malcolm Greene won the long jump during the Region A Track and Field Championships at West Point High School.

• The Southampton Lady Indians overcame a first-inning, 4-0 deficit to defeat Park View 10-7 and capture the Southside District title.

• Franklin Coach Dennis Sumblin was named the boys’ Coach of the Year for the Tri-Rivers District after the Broncos placed third in the district championship track meet at Charles City.

• The Southampton Academy baseball team beat Broadwater Academy 2-1 Wednesday behind nine strikeouts by Tonee Hill to advance to the state semifinals against Fuqua.

• The Southampton Academy softball team beat Tidewater Academy 9-1 Wednesday to advance to the state semifinals against defending champion Kenston Forest

May 20: An eighth-inning run by Southampton High School catcher Cecil Lowe gave the Indians a 12-11 Southside District win over Park View.

• Southampton High School’s Kirstyn Andrew won the 800-meter run during the Southside District Track Meet and qualified for the Region I Track and Field Championship.

May 23: The No. 2 ranked Southampton Academy baseball team lost 5-3 to No. 4 Blessed Sacrament Huguenot for the state title in the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Saturday at Shepherd Stadium in Colonial Heights.

May 25: Isle of Wight Academy junior pitcher Hailey Glover and freshman pitcher and shortstop Bailey Key were named to the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Division II First Team All-State team.

• The top-ranked Windsor baseball team won the Tri-Rivers District Tournament after defeating No. 2 seed Surry 12-0.

May 27: The Southampton High School girls’ softball team finished the regular season with a 15-2 Southside District win over Prince Edward. Southampton High School third baseman Madison Cabell was named Southside District Player of the Year.

• Windsor’s Josh Edwards won the high jump and Malcolm Greene won the long jump during Region A Track and Field Championships at West Point High School.

May 30: Southampton High Schools’ Tanner Winters picked up his fifth win of the season, throwing a four-hit shutout and striking out nine during round one of the region tournament. The No. 1 seed Indians defeated third-ranked Spotsylvania 4-0

 

June

June 6: The Franklin High School boys’ 4X100 relay team finished fourth out of 20 teams in the Virginia Group A State Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Radford University. Travis Brown, Latrell Lane, Reshard Sumblin and Marcus Stephens clocked a 43.68 to earn state medals.

June 8: Franklin High School students Emmanuel Ricks and Katisha Bynum received the Bronco and Bronkette awards for excellence in athletics during the 2012 Spring Awards Night.

June 15: Franklin’s Lindsay Raulston has been ranked 19th in the nation in the NCAA Division II women’s tennis end-of-the-year rankings.

June 22: The team of James Ridley, Frankie Bordeaux, Bill Covington Sr. and Terry Moore won the 13th annual Southampton Invitational golf tournament with a score of 16 under par.

June 29: A former Isle of Wight Academy quarterback and walk-on at James Madison University has earned a full scholarship after his first full year of play. JMU wide receiver Daniel Brown played in every game last season as a red shirt sophomore.

 

August

Aug 3: After taking a one-year hiatus from varsity play, Tidewater Academy has dropped its football program.

Aug 17: Southampton High School catcher Emily Nelson was selected to compete in the Queen of Diamonds Showcase South at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, S.C.

Aug 19: For the first time in Southampton High School history, the golf team scored under 300 during a match.

Aug 22: Windsor’s golf team remains undefeated after winning its third Tri-Rivers District golf match at Cypress Creek Golf Course in Smithfield.

Aug 24: Former Chowan University basketball coach and Franklin resident Jim Tribbett has been hired as Southampton Academy boys’ basketball coach.

Aug 26: It was all about Southampton Academy’s ground attack of Tonee Hill, Paul Parker and Nate Williams in a 64-7 win against Halifax Friday.

• A kickoff return helped spark the Windsor Dukes to a 14-8 win over Arcadia in a non-district battle Friday night.

Aug 29: Southampton Academy has hired former Franklin High School Volleyball Coach Frank Seal to the same position.

Aug 31: Tidewater Academy rookie volleyball Coach Jimmy Dunn has taken over for Amanda Binford.

• The Southampton Academy volleyball team on Tuesday won its first match of the season, defeating Amelia 3-2.

 

September

Sept. 2: Southampton Academy improved to 2-0 on the year with a 54-34 win in a shootout over Rocky Mount Academy.

Sept. 5: An 87-yard kickoff return by junior Gage Rogers in the fourth quarter helped seal a 37-14 Isle of Wight Academy victory over Portsmouth Christian.

Sept. 7: Southampton High School senior Billy Britton picked up his third win of the season after shooting a one over par during a Southside District golf match.

Sept. 9: Southampton Academy proved it’s more than a “Tonee Hill offense” on Friday night. Out with a sprained neck, the star junior running back watched as his teammates routed Northeast Academy 60-14 to improve to 3-0 in the Colonial Carolina Conference.

• Franklin benefited from Southampton miscues including five fumbles in a 48-6 romp over the Indians Friday night.

Sept. 12: The Southampton High School volleyball team placed second in the third annual Endless Summer Volleyball Tournament at the Hampton Roads Convention Center in Virginia Beach.

Sept. 14: Southampton High School senior Tabbitha Bruck picked up her third win of the season during a Southside District cross country meet. Bruck finished the run in 23:02.

• Windsor seniors Cody Reese and Sean Dejiacomo finished first and second during a match to help the Dukes remain undefeated in Tri-Rivers District play.

• Southampton Academy junior Katelyn Newsome’s18 kills led the volleyball team to a 3-1 win over Fuqua.

Sept. 16: The Isle of Wight Academy football team won its season opener in the Virginia Commonwealth Conference with a 41-15 trouncing of Kenston Forest.

Sept. 19: James Madison University wide receiver Daniel Brown, a former Isle of Wight Academy quarterback, is out for the rest of the season.

• The Windsor volleyball team handed Southampton Academy its first loss of the season with a 3-2 win.

• The Southampton High School boys’ cross country team placed first during a Southside District meet, while the girls took second.

Sept. 21: More than 200 runners and walkers will participate in the Mustang 10K/5K and 1-mile run/walk to benefit the Franklin Mustangs peewee football team.

• Southampton High School girls’ volleyball team improved to 2-0 in the Southside District after defeating Park View in three games.

• Tidewater Academy remains undefeated in the Virginia Commonwealth Conference after going 3-2 against host Kenston Forest.

Sept. 23: The Isle of Wight Academy Chargers won their second straight Virginia Commonwealth Conference game of the season with a 40-14 victory over Brunswick Academy.

• Southampton Academy’s Tonee Hill contributed on both sides of the ball and scored seven touchdowns in a 92-62 win over Hobgood Academy.

• The Windsor Dukes improved their season record to 2-3 after crushing the Northampton Yellow Jackets 64 –8 in a non-district football game.

• The Rappahannock Raiders led the Franklin Broncos late in the fourth quarter until senior Travis Brown hit pay dirt with 3:27 left to seal the 31-28 win.

Sept. 26: Southampton High School junior Madison Cabell on Monday reached her 100th kill of the season to help the Lady Indians defeat Windsor 3-0.

• Windsor and Franklin during Monday’s Tri-Rivers District golf tournament qualified for the region tournament at Hobbs Hole in Essex.

Sept. 28: Former Franklin receiver Justin Grant ran back the opening kickoff for 90 yards and a touchdown during the University of Richmond’s 46-7 rout of Virginia Military Institute.

• Jessica Blythe had 17 assists to help Windsor defeat Sussex Central during its Tri-Rivers District opener.

Sept. 30: A Friday night battle of two unbeaten teams ended with Franklin defeating West Point 51-14 for its homecoming at Armory Field rushing for a total of 455 yards with Travis Brown having 165 and Marcus Stephens 110.

• Southampton Academy junior Tonee Hill scored four touchdowns, including one for 98 yards, and threw a 61-yard touchdown pass to lead the Raiders to a 52-40 homecoming victory over Parrot Academy on Friday.

The Southampton High School volleyball team remains undefeated in the Southside District after defeating Prince Edward 3-0.

Oct. 3: Former Southampton High School standout running back Cyrus Lawrence will be inducted into the Hampton Roads African American Sports Hall of Fame.

• Franklin senior Grant Scarboro during the regional tournament missed getting into the state tournament after losing on the first hole of a three-person playoff for the final spot.

Oct. 5: Southampton High School seniors Billy Britton and Lewis Mayes have qualified for the Group AA Virginia High School League Golf Championships in Harrisonburg.

• Southampton High School juniors Madison Cabell and Madeleine Kahle both recorded 8 kills in two sets of play during a 3-0 Southside District win over host Greensville.

Tidewater Academy defeated host Amelia Academy 3-0 to remain undefeated in the Virginia Commonwealth Conference. The Lady Warriors improved to 9-0 in the VCC.

Oct. 7 –With four seconds remaining in the game, Isle of Wight Academy’s Zeb Warnick returned a 95-yard interception to seal the Chargers’ 33-20 win over Broadwater Academy on Friday.

• Franklin’s Latrell Lane rushed for 150 yards and touchdowns for 35 and 70 yards to help the Broncos to a 54-6 Tri-Rivers District win over host Surry on Friday night.

• A Franklin teen scored two perfect games within a week at the Franklin Bowling Center.

Dylan Thomas, 18, rolled 12 back-to-back strikes on Sept. 20, and Sept. 27.

Oct. 12: A proposed realignment from three to six classifications for Virginia High School League schools looks to renew old rivalries in Western Tidewater.

• Franklin senior Grant Scarboro was asked to play in the Group A Virginia High School League Golf Championships after a player dropped out.

• Southampton High School seniors Lewis Mayes and Billy Britton placed 50th and 53rd, respectively, during the Group AA Virginia High School League Golf Championships.

Oct. 14 –A Southampton Academy touchdown with 3 seconds left in Friday’s game ended Word of God Christian Academy’s 35-game winning streak and makes the Raiders the No. 1 seed for the playoffs. “It was one of the more exciting finishes I’ve been associated with,” said SA Coach Dale Marks. The game was tied 34-34 with 16 seconds left when the Raiders took over the ball on their own 26-yard line. SA moved the ball 74 yards in two plays. Quarterback Tonee Hill hit Paul Parker with a 46-yard pass. Quarterback Matt Rose followed by completing a 28-yard touchdown pass to Hill.

Oct. 17: The Tidewater Academy volleyball team placed first in the Alliance Christian Volleyball Tournament in Portsmouth

Oct. 19: Southampton Academy’s volleyball team defeated Kenston Forest 3-1 in a Virginia Commonwealth Conference match. The Lady Raiders improved to 8-2 in the VCC and 9-4 overall.

• The Southampton High School volleyball team came from behind to beat Prince Edward 3-2 to remain undefeated in the Southside District.

Oct. 21: For the first time in his 21-year football-coaching career with Southampton Academy, Dale Marks led the Raiders to an undefeated regular season.

• With only a few seconds remaining, Windsor’s defense fought off a Surry attack to win Friday’s Tri-Rivers District game 14-12.

• Southampton High School senior Tabbitha Bruck’s second-place finish in a cross country meet helped the Lady Indians win the event.

Oct. 26: Southampton High School seniors Tabbitha Bruck and Daniel Lowdermilk received second- and third-place medals, respectively, during the Southside District Championship cross country meet.

• The Southampton High School volleyball team won the Southside District title after defeating host Park View in three sets.

Oct. 28: Southampton Academy on Friday night defeated the Lawrence Academy 58-20 in the quarterfinals of the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association 8-Man state championship playoffs.

• Isle of Wight Academy senior Matt Brummett on Friday night ran the opening play for a 65-yard touchdown, and the Chargers never looked back.

Oct. 31: Franklin senior Travis Brown ran for six touchdowns in the 62-30 rout of Sussex Central Tigers on Saturday during a Tri-Rivers District game.

Nov. 2: The Southampton Academy and Tidewater Academy volleyball teams win in their first rounds of the Virginia Commonwealth Conference Tournament.

Nov. 4: Southampton Academy will return to the state championship game for the first time since 2004 after defeating the Cary Christian Knights 64-36 in the semi-finals of the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association 8-Man state championship playoffs.

• The Isle of Wight Academy Chargers clinched a playoff birth Friday night when they defeated the Atlantic Shores Christian Seahawks 48-16. The Chargers came into the game ranked No. 4 in the Division III poll of the Virginia Independent School Athletic Association.

• The Southampton High School Indians triumphed in overtime over Southside District opponent Prince Edward 28-26, for the regular season finale.

• “I am proud of my players and coaches,” remarked Franklin High School head football coach Darren Parker after the Broncos made easy work of the Windsor Dukes on Friday night at Armory Football Stadium, cruising to a 63–0 victory. The Broncos, playing their last game of the regular season, clinched the district and gained home field advantage for the state playoffs.

• The Windsor High School cheerleading squad was runner-up at the Region A Cheer Competition at King William High School.

Nov. 7: Tidewater Academy’s volleyball team won its conference tournament and advanced to the state tournament.

• No. 3 Grafton upset the top-ranked Southampton High School volleyball team 0-3, eliminating the Lady Indians’ hopes for the state tournament and ending their season.

Nov. 9: Southampton High School junior volleyball player Madeline Kahle was named the Southside District Player of the Year.

• The No. 7-ranked Tidewater Academy volleyball team’s season came to an end after losing to No. 2 Hampton Christian 0-3 in the state tournament.

Nov. 11: Southampton Academy won its second state title in eight years after defeating the Word of God: the state champions for the past three seasons. The score was 52-28.

Fired-up Franklin won the opening round of the Eastern Sectional Division 1 playoffs 56-9 against Craig County at Armory Field

Nov. 16: For Windsor senior cheerleader Tabitha Butler, it takes months of devotion followed by three minutes of perfection in hopes of bringing home the gold. Butler was part of the Lady Dukes squad, which fell 6.5 points short of advancing to the finals during the Group A State Competition at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. The squad placed eighth out of the 12 teams.

• Isle of Wight Academy lost a 28-20 heartbreaker to Virginia Episcopal in the final minutes the semi-final round of the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Division III State championship playoffs.

Nov. 18 –The Franklin Broncos defeated the Covington Cougars 48-10 in the second round of the Virginia High School League Group A Division 1 Eastern section playoffs.

Nov. 23: The Boykin’s Bulldogs fought off a fourth-quarter drive by the Franklin Mustangs to win the championship game for the first time in four years.

The Franklin Mustangs football team during its playoff game presented $4,000 to Hope For The Warriors.

Nov. 25: The Franklin Broncos on Friday night defeated visiting Altavista Combined School 41-11 in the quarterfinal round of the Virginia High School League Group A Division 1 state championship playoffs.

Nov. 28: Isle of Wight Academy senior Nathan Sivertson scored 30 points in the Chargers’ second straight win

Dec. 5: After being down 27-7 at the end of third quarter, Franklin scored two touchdowns in the fourth and nearly pulled off a third. An interception with 2:10 left in the game ended the team’s hopes of advancing to the state championship game for third time in eight years.

• Tidewater Academy senior Cary Beahm scored 24 points in the Lady Warriors’ 47-33 win over Southampton Academy in Virginia Commonwealth Conference play.

Dec. 7: Franklin’s Jayla Cross netted 20 points and 11 rebounds to help the Lady Broncos defeat Southampton High School 61-59 in overtime.

• The Windsor boys’ basketball team defeated host Nansemond-Suffolk Academy 52-44 in overtime.

Dec. 9: Isle of Wight Academy sophomore Gabriella Hooper scored 17 points in the Lady Chargers’ 45-22 win over Denbigh Baptist Christian in Metro Athletic Conference play. The Lady Chargers improved to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the MAC.

Dec. 12: Tidewater Academy senior Cary Beahm scored 26 points in the Lady Warriors’ 54-30 win over Kenston Forest in Virginia Commonwealth Conference play.

Dec. 14: Southampton High School junior TaLisha Jenkins scored a game-high 23 points to lead the Lady Indians to a 51-42 non-conference win over Surry.

• Six-foot-5 Windsor junior Romello McKiver scored 11 points and made 14 rebounds to lead the Dukes to a 58-39 win over Appomattox Regional Governor’s School.

Dec. 19: Windsor junior Justice Chapman’s 3-pointer late in the game gave the Dukes a 42-41 win over Tidewater Academy after trailing 19-4 in the first quarter.

Dec. 21: Franklin sophomore Marcus Stephens scored 20 points to lead the Broncos to a 43-31 come-from-behind win over rival Southampton High School.

Dec. 23: Isle of Wight Academy senior Nathan Sivertson scored 16 points in the Chargers’68-48 win over non-conference foe Nansemond Suffolk Academy.

• The Southampton Academy girls’ basketball team defeated Ridgecroft 41-36 in the opening game of the second annual Battle of the Borders Tournament.

Dec. 26: The Southampton Academy boys’ basketball team defeated Halifax Academy 75-42 in the second game of the annual Battle of the Border Tournament.
