Adelaide Kitchen Harrup journeyed home to her Lord and Savior at her home on Oak Level Farm in Yale, Va., on Monday, December 10, 2012, after a courageous season at home with loving care from her three dedicated daughters.

She was born on August 13, 1924, in Yale, Va., to Marian Gage Swift and Sam F. Kitchen.

She graduated from Stony Creek High School in 1942 and remained close to her classmates throughout her life.

Adelaide married George, the love of her life, also a native of Yale, on December 18, 1943.

In 1953 they moved to Oak Level, where they lived a full and active life together.

Many civic and community organizations filled Adelaide’s active life, while being a member since birth of Antioch Baptist Church, where she served numerous years as Sunday School teacher and Deacon and is remembered for her children’s messages.

She served as a statewide officer in the Cooperative Extension and was a founding board member of the Mile B. Carpenter Museum in Waverly, Va. She served as chairman of the American Heart Association, Sussex County, and took the U.S. Census for Sussex County from 1960 to 1970.

Adelaide was a clerk at the Yale Post Office for 19 years, and Postmaster for three years.

She immensely enjoyed spending time in her gardens and greenhouse from early morning until sunset. Her giving spirit reigned as she gifted many of her knitted creations, plants and baked goods to friends and family over the years.

Loved by every member of her family and revered as well as respected by so many, to say Adelaide will be missed is a vast understatement.

Her radiant smile and eternal love of Jesus until her departure made an indelible mark on all of our lives, and we are grateful to carry her huge spirit in our hearts forever.

Adelaide was preceded in death by her husband, George; and is survived by her three loving daughters, Bonnie Scimone (Alfredo) of Petersburg, Katherine Kurash (David) of Lakeland, Fla., and Georgia Webb (Dana) of Yale. Her five grandchildren, Jenna Wilson (Eddie) of Midlothian, Marshall Balance (Galma) of Hull, Ga., Jared Webb (Abbey) of Yale, Adam Webb (Ashley) of Yale and Elizabeth Webb of Alexandria all lovingly called her “Mema,” as did her 11 great-grandchildren.

She also is survived by her loving sister, Audrey Coppedge of Richmond; and three brothers, Charles G. Kitchen (Nettie), Emerson B. Kitchen (Janet) of Southampton, and Roger H. Kitchen (Reatha); and sister-in-law, Carol Kitchen of Yale; and numerous nieces, nephews and dear friends.

Adelaide was also preceded in death by a brother, Sam Kitchen; and sister, Marilyn Vick.

The family received friends 6 to 8 p.m. Dec. 12 at Owen Funeral Home, 303 S. Halifax Road, Jarratt, Va. The funeral service was held 2 p.m. Thursday, December 13, 2012, at Antioch Baptist Church, Yale, Va. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Antioch Baptist Church, Special Memorial Fund, c/o Carol Kitchen, 21244 Gilliam Road, Yale, Va., 23897, or to Hospice of Virginia, 17000 Bayberry Court, Richmond, Va., 23226.
