ISLE OF WIGHT—The 1,800 Isle of Wight County households who use a trash pick-up service could get a new company serving them in April.

Customers pay about $16 to $18 per month for the service. Eddie Wrightson, director of General Services for the county, said at this time it’s not known if fees would go up.

“Whoever we select with will contract directly with customers,” said Wrightson.

A contract with BFI is coming to an end and other haulers are interested in providing the service. In addition to BFI, others seeking the contract are Waste Management, Waste Industries, AVES and RDS, Wrightson said.

Interviews are being scheduled, and Wrightson expects his department to make a recommendation during the 5 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 20, Board of Supervisors meeting at the courthouse. The hearing for residents to comment on proposal will begin at 7.

Moody’s originally had the contract 15 years ago, but sold it to BFI, which got two, five-year renewals. The new deal would be approximately five years, with an option for another five, said Wrightson.
