Man arrested for allegedly assaulting wife, children

DREWRYVILLE—A Drewryville man remains in jail for allegedly beating up his wife, 5-year-old daughter and 3-year-old son, the Southampton County Sheriff’s Office reported.

Averick Montrell Ricks, 27, was arrested after the sheriff’s office at 11:35 a.m. Sunday were called to the couple’s home in the 24000 block of Sykes Drive for an alleged domestic assault.

A 24-year-old woman told deputies her husband had choked her. Deputies said they also found bruises and scratches on the children, which led them to believe they’d been assaulted.

The three victims were treated and released at Southampton Memorial Hospital.

Ricks was charged with three counts of assault on family members, his third offense. He also was charged with two counts of abuse and neglect of children and strangling another causing an injury.

There is also a protective order in place. Southampton Social Services is assisting in the investigation.
