Smithfield woman seriously hurt in crash with IOW deputy

ISLE OF WIGHT—A Smithfield woman was seriously injured after an Isle of Wight County Sheriff’s deputy drove into the path of the sport utility vehicle she was driving on Wednesday, Virginia State Police reported.

Suzanne Kuhlman, 34, and her unidentified 7- and 16-year-old daughters were taken to Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News. Their conditions were unavailable.

Deputy Steven Sheridan, 27, was treated and released from Sentara Obici Hospital in Suffolk.

Sheridan at 7:15 a.m. was northbound on Route 258 and attempted to turn left into the county courthouse complex on Monument Circle when he drove into he path of Kuhlman’s Honda CRV, police said.

The road was closed for one hour and 20 minutes.

Charges are pending, police said.
