WAVERLY—Two Waverly residents on Thursday were charged with operating a meth lab from their apartment and the car wash below, the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office reported.

Cynthia Lynn Maupin, 41, and Joseph Shaun Ellis, 32, were arrested after police at 2:35 p.m. raided Waverly Car Wash on U.S. Route 460, said sheriff’s investigator William Banty.

The owner of the car wash was unaware of the lab, part of which was set up in a room with the water pumps for operating the business, Banty said.

“We found all of the precursors related to manufacturing meth, including lithium, Coleman fuel, funnels, coffee filters, bottles and bottle caps, plastic baggies and meth,” he said.

The amount of meth is yet to be determined, Banty said.

Maupin and Ellis were charged with manufacturing methamphetamine and possession of ingredients to make the drug. Both were taken to the county jail without bond.
