W. Thomas Lawrence

GATESVILLE, N.C.—William Thomas “Tommy” Lawrence, 63, of 217 Main Street, died Saturday, November 3, 2012, at his home.

A native of Gates County, he was the son of the late William Henry “Billy” and Mary Edith Smith Lawrence.

An educator, he first taught at Central School in Gatesville and later served as its assistant principal and then principal at Sunbury Elementary School. He retired from the public schools of Gates County after serving as the principal of Gates County High School. He then went to work in in the Virginia School System and served as the principal of Franklin High School.

A member and deacon of Gatesville Baptist Church, he also enjoyed membership in the Gates County Historical Society.

Surviving are his sister, Mary Lauranzon and husband, Nick, of Disputanta, Va.; a niece, Jennifer Marie Lauranzon, a nephew, Kevin William Lauranzon, and a great-nephew, Tyler William Lauranzon, all of Chester, Va.; and many extended family members and friends.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Gatesville Baptist Church by the Revs. Gene Asbill and Billy Presley. A private burial will follow in the Lawrence Family Cemetery.

Friends may join the family Tuesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main St., Gatesville, and other times at the residence.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to either Gatesville Baptist Church or Gates County Historical Society, both in Gatesville, N.C., 27938.
