COURTLAND—Records show that the BMW driven by Southampton County’s assistant administrator is now registered in Virginia.
Southampton County Commissioner of Revenue Amy B. Carr confirmed that Assistant County Administrator Jon Mendenhall’s vehicle is on the tax roll for 2012.
Mendenhall said he registered his vehicle with the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles the week of Sept. 17, after the matter was brought to his attention in the Sept. 14 issue of The Tidewater News.
“One of my personal philosophies is if something is wrong you need to fix it,” he said.
Southampton County Treasurer David Britt said Mendenhall would be billed for the 2012 personal property taxes, at the county’s current tax rate of $5 for every $100 of a vehicle’s assessed value.
“He has been picked up this year,” Britt said. “Once he gets his bill he will be like everyone else in the county, he will be responsible for paying his taxes by Dec. 5.”
In the Sept. 14 issue it was reported that Mendenhall, a resident of Country Villa Apartments who began working for county on April 25, 2011, had not changed his vehicle’s registration.
His vehicle was photographed prior to the issues release during business hours at the Southampton County government building still bearing North Carolina license plates.
Mendenhall wanted to express his thanks to the DMV in how the process was so efficient.
“The ladies at the DMV were very nice and helped me in the process,” he said.
According to Randolph County, N.C., tax records Mendenhall had paid taxes on the vehicle prior to the Sept. 1 deadline in his hometown of Trinity, N.C. near Greensboro.
