The construction of a new U.S. Route 460 will be a massive project for Western Tidewater.

We would expect that the 55-mile toll road, which will run from Suffolk to Petersburg, will also change the lives of those who will have to deal with the $1.4 billion highway in their backyards.

Much of the disruption we expect would occur during the four years it will take to build the road; the job will involve 4,000 workers. What an economic boom to the area.

A lot of questions remain about the project.

Just last week, residents of Tucker Swamp Road near Ivor expressed concerns for the highway cutting through their road, creating dead-ends on both sides. No decisions have been made.

Another opportunity to learn more about the new Route 460 will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 29, in the cafeteria at Windsor High School.

Folks are asked to attend and provide input to develop land-use alternatives.

Prior to the meeting, the Isle of Wight, Smithfield, Windsor, and Franklin-Southampton Area Chamber of Commerce will host a presentation by the project manager. Those attending can follow up with questions.
