Postal Service commended

A majority of Newsoms residents proved their ability to make a difference.
A strong survey response related to the future of the community post office ensured the facility would remain open with reduced hours.
For cost-savings, the U.S. Postal Service was looking at options for Newsoms, such as eliminating post office boxes in exchange for rural delivery, contracting a local business to handle minimal postal services, or closing the post office.
Beginning Jan. 12, the post office will operate 8:30 a.m. to noon and 2 to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday.
Boykins, Branchville, Carrsville, Drewryville, Isle of Wight, Sedley and Zuni face similar stories.
If residents of those localities want to help keep their post offices open, they would do well to take a page from Newsoms. Make your wishes known by answering a survey the will be mailed to you.
Let’s hope that postal customers in other venues show their appreciation and maintain an important service in their lives.
