To the Editor:

I walked into the Franklin City Library at 9:30 a.m. on Oct. 18 and learned that nine young men had just gotten probable job placements with Remedy Staffing for the Ace Hardware Supply Depot in Suffolk.

Every Thursday from 9 to 11 a.m., the Job Club meets at the library in conjunction with the Virginia Employment Commission.

There, job seekers can learn to write resumes, prepare for job interviews and are networked by the Internet with possible employers.

Six months ago 24 workers received probable placement with the Target Warehouse Depot in Suffolk. (The City of Franklin still has a high rate of unemployment.”)

The Franklin Library has after-school tutoring. (The City of Franklin school system ranks as one of the lowest in the state.)

The Franklin Library offers support services such as free computer use with free Wi-Fi and printing availability for small businesses. (The City of Franklin’s economy challenges small businesses.)

With these local concerns in Franklin and with the available resources offered by the Franklin Library, can we afford to cut library funding that has in turn cut the library hours and staffing?
