POWHATAN—Isle of Wight Academy looks to remain undefeated in the Metro Athletic Conference as the Chargers travel to Blessed Sacrament-Huguenot in Powhatan for a 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19, game.

Blessed Sacrament is also undefeated in the MAC.

The Chargers, who are 5-1 overall, look to improve on their fourth-place ranking in Division III poll of the Virginia Independent School Athletic Association.

IWA had a bye last week and two weeks earlier defeated Broadwater Academy 33-20.

SOUTHAMPTON ACADEMY

Southampton Academy is coming off its biggest game of the year after defeating Word of God Christian Academy on Oct. 12, thus ending the Ram’s 35-game winning streak.

The Raider win also wrapped up the No. 1 seed for the playoffs. There’s a chance Southampton Academy could meet No. 2 Word of God for the state title.

The Raiders at 7:30 tonight will host Lawrence Academy; the Warriors are 2-6 for the year.

This season, the Raiders have outscored their opponents 476-265, while the Warriors have allowed 405 points while scoring 255.

“They (Lawrence) have 11 seniors and have been putting up points, but they are just having a hard time getting a W (win),” said SA Head Coach Dale Marks.

These two teams will meet again on Friday, Oct. 26, for the first round of the Colonial Carolina Conference playoffs. The Warriors are ranked No. 8.

“We just need a continuation of what we’ve been doing,” said Marks. “We will keep relying more on a power running game, reach sweeps, crack sweeps, unless someone forces us to change. We need to keep explosive on offense, with several different options with Matt Rose, Tonee Hill, Paul Parker and Cameron Hines.”

FRANKLIN HIGH SCHOOL

The undefeated Broncos will travel to King & Queen Central High School for a non-district game, with kickoff at 7 p.m. Friday.

Franklin is 7-0 for the season, while King and Queen is 1-5.

“We just have to make sure we do our job, and we are looking to a great game with King & Queen,” said FHS Head Coach Darren Parker. “We are going into the game after a great week of practice on all three facets of the game.”

The King & Queen game will wrap a three-game road trip for the Broncos.

“We have had a lot of fans travel with us, and we greatly appreciate that, but it’s going to be great to come back come back to our home crowd next week,” said Parker.

The Broncos are one of two undefeated teams in the Virginia High School League Division 1. Sussex Central — also in the Tri-River District — is the other. Franklin will host Sussex on Friday, Oct. 26.

WINDSOR HIGH SCHOOL

The Dukes, who are 2-6 overall, at 7 p.m. Friday will play Surry High School on the road for a Tri-Rivers District game. Surry is 3-5 overall.

Both teams are winless in the district.

“It’s going to be tough as usual when you go over to Surry,” said WHS Head Coach Chuck Parrish. “Our guys have been working hard this week. We’re looking for a win. We just need to capitalize on all three sides of the ball, offense, defense and special teams. We just need to keep playing hard as a team.”

SOUTHAMPTON HIGH SCHOOL

The Indians have a bye week before hosting Southside District opponent Brunswick High School at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26, for Senior Night.

“We have four good, hard, disciplined practices per week,” said SHS Head Coach Wes Griffith. “We need to play four complete quarters and we will be ready for our last two games of the regular season.”

The Indians are 1-7 overall and 0-2 in the district.
