Sherwood L. Harrell

SUFFOLK—Sherwood Leon Harrell, 73, of 1996 Kings Highway, Suffolk, died Tuesday, October 16, 2012, in Sentara Obici Hospital.

Mr. Harrell was born in Chowan County, N.C., and was the son of the late Gilbert Leon and Pearl Evans Harrell.

A retired computer programmer with Severn Peanut Co., he was a member of Southside Baptist Church and was a former member of the Jaycees, various area Ruritan Clubs and the Mid-Atlantic Champ Kart Association.

A veteran, he had served in both the N.C. Army National Guard and the U.S. Navy, and as an inventor, in 1992 he received a patent for a spray attachment for lawn mowers.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son, Bryan Todd Williams; a brother, Aubrey Harrell; and a brother-in-law, Thurman Ashley.

Surviving are his wife of 26 years, Faye Stanley Harrell; two daughters, Kimberly Harrell Williams and husband Danny of Courtland, Va., and Tara Williams Moore of Suffolk; a son, Stanley Leon Harrell and wife Linda of Virginia Beach; a sister, Lois H. Ashley of Edenton, N.C.; a brother, Zackie W. Harrell and wife Kathryn of Gatesville, N.C.; a sister-in-law, Jessie D. Harrell of Williamston, N.C.; and four grandchildren, Leslie Danielle Williams, Barrett Todd Moore, Bryan Mitchell Moore and Lauren Elizabeth Harris.

A graveside service with military honors will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in Beaver Hill Cemetery, Edenton, and will be officiated by his nephew, the Rev. Dean Harrell.

Friends may join the family Thursday from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. in Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main St., Gatesville, and other times at the residence.
