S’hampton planners commended

The Southampton County Planning Commission is commended for doing the right thing on Thursday.

The board unanimously recommended rezoning 20 acres for a $4 million to $6 million concrete and asphalt plant on Route 460 west of Ivor.

To us, the location for AMAC’s project fits because it lies within an area that will be targeted for future industrial development. Nearby residents are few.

Should the Board of Supervisors approve the rezoning request, it will mean up to 50 new jobs.

AMAC also should generate $600,000 in real estate, machinery and tools, and personal property taxes for the county over 10 years.

Southampton County has earned a bit of not-in-my-backyard reputation. That’s understandable for those who live her for its rural qualities.

But this project make sense. It fits.

We hope the supervisors will follow suit during their 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22, meeting when they will be asked to give final approval on the rezoning request.
