BIG STONE GAP—Franklin senior Grant Scarboro was asked to play in the Group A Virginia High School League Golf Championships after a player dropped out.

“Grant didn’t qualify, but was next in line,” said Franklin Coach Dave Lease. “Someone from Matthews did not go.”

Scarboro shot a 149 for 27 holes during the Monday and Tuesday tournament at Lonesome Pine Golf Course. He shot a 54 on nine holes that day and a 95 on 18 holes the second.

“The first day it was raining and 48 degrees,” Lease said. “Considering he didn’t practice and everything being last minute…”

Grant during the Oct. 3 regional tournament missed getting into the state tournament after losing on the first hole of a three-person playoff for the final spot. He scored a season-best 82 during the 36-hole match.
