SMITHFIELD—Dr. Linda Turner Morgan, 69, of Smithfield, Va., died Monday, October 8, 2012, at her home.

Dr. Morgan’s two great joys were her family and education. She dedicated her life to raising her two sons and educating the Hampton Roads region with special service to Isle of Wight County.

She started teaching in Hampton, Va., elementary schools and quickly moved to Christopher Newport College and their teacher education department.

Dr. Morgan served on the Isle of Wight County School Board, representing the Hardy District, for 15 years and served as the board’s chairperson for seven.

In 1997, she returned to serving students directly, resigning from the school board to work as assistant principal at Carrolton Elementary, and the following year she became the principal of Carrsville Elementary.

She then returned to Carrolton Elementary in 2000 as principal until her retirement in 2003.

Retirement away from schools, teachers, staff and especially students did not suit Dr. Morgan, and she quickly returned to teaching education courses for CNU and UVA, while evaluating student teachers in the Hampton Roads region.

She was a member of Trinity United Methodist church and taught Sunday school.

She had the pleasure of positively impacting thousands of lives through her years as a mother, grandmother, teacher, school administrator, professor and civic leader.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Carolyn Turner Floyd; and her parents, P.S. Turner and Dorothy Gwaltney Turner.

She is survived by her two sons and daughters-in-law, Hunter Scott Hornback and Courtney Decker Hornback of Raleigh, N.C., and Justin Smith Hornback and Rebecca Jackson Hornback of Norfolk, Va.; three grandchildren, Jackson Hunter and Caroline Grace Hornback of Raleigh, N.C., and Anna Turner Hornback of Norfolk, Va.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, October 11, 2012, from 6-8 p.m. at Colonial Funeral Home. A service celebrating her life will be at 1 p.m. Friday, October 12, at Trinity United Methodist Church. Burial will be private in St. Luke’s Memorial Park.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Educational Fund for Isle of Wight County Public Schools, Attn: Sharon Gwaltney, 820 W. Main St., Smithfield, Va., 23430

Arrangements are in the care of Colonial Funeral Home, Smithfield.
