Takers will not stop taking until givers stop giving

To the Editor:

What a great Your Turn column (“America needs to make right choice in November,” Sept. 26) in The Tidewater News!

Mrs. Hartman was right on the money. That should be required reading for everybody in the nation.

I was interested to read about her father, the late Harvey Pope. My father also grew up in the Depression. His family was saddled with an alcoholic father; his mother took in laundry and did many other things to try to make ends meet.

When he graduated from high school, he was offered an athletic scholarship to William and Mary. But as the oldest of four children, he had to turn his hand to supporting the family.

He went into the Civilian Conservation Corps for some time, and even sold magazines door to door in Florida and sent the money home for his family’s support.

But he never expected anybody else to take care of him or his family.

Bless Mrs. Hartman for writing this column and reminding us of who we are. I firmly believe the “takers” will never stop taking until the “givers” stop giving.
