WINDSOR—A suspicious package left in a Windsor-area mailbox turned out to be a smoke detector.

A mail carrier discovered the package at 9:15 a.m. Tuesday in the 13000 block of Old Suffolk Road and reported hearing a ringing sound coming from a mailbox, said Virginia State Police Sgt. Michelle Anaya.

Emergency officials were notified,

“After further investigation it was determined that the mailbox contained a working smoke detector,” Anaya said. “Earlier that morning a contractor had been working at the residence and forgot to place the smoke detector back inside the residence. The contractor threw the detector into the mailbox and failed to notify the owner.”
