COURTLAND— Three people were hurt after the driver of a sport utility vehicle ran a stop sign at 1:15 p.m. Monday and hit a car transporting a Southampton County Public Schools special needs student, Virginia State police said.

Taken to Southampton Memorial Hospital were Patricia Mastronardi, 58, of Courtland; Teresa Gaskins, 73, of Franklin; and a 12-year-old unidentified boy, said Trooper N.L. Johnson.

Mastronardi and Gaskins were treated and released, said hospital spokeswoman Anne Williams. The condition of the boy could not be released because he is a minor, Williams said. Johnson believed he would also be treated and released.

Mastronardi drove her sport utility vehicle through a stop sign at Story Station and Bethel roads, Johnson said. Her vehicle hit a 1998 Dodge Stratus that belongs to the school district and was driven by Gaskins.

Mastronardi was cited with failure to yield.
