Since being elected in November, State Del. Rick Morris has impressed us. He’s doing what he promised.

The Republican from Carrollton’s current endeavor involves finding ways for county and local governments and school districts to save money by sharing services.

At 8 a.m. Monday, Sept. 17, Morris will host a meeting with officials from Isle of Wight County and its schools, and Windsor and Smithfield to discuss the matter. He’s starting off with his home county and plans to hold similar meetings with other counties.

Morris also in January plans to introduce a bill that would require the state to help counties pay for a consultant to see what services could possibly be consolidated.

Times are tough. Local government and school district officials are racking their brains with innovative ways to do more with less.

Not duplicating services could potentially save millions and lower property taxes. For instance, a county and school district could share a human resource office for hiring employees.

Monday’s meeting is open to the public. Attend if interested.
