Former Southampton man murdered

RICHMOND—Richmond police are investigating the Sunday murder of a former Southampton County man.
James Earl Porter, 39, of Richmond was reportedly shot to death on Gordon Avenue, police said. Porter was found unresponsive about 11:36 p.m. in the 2300 block and died at MCV Medical College Hospital, police said.
Police said detectives are pursuing leads and a motive in the slaying. They have no suspects.
A construction worker and former Marine, Porter was a 1992 Southampton High School graduate. He was the son of the late David Porter and Pearl Ella Denson. The late Samuel and Shirley Williams raised him.
