SMITHFIELD—State Del. Rick Morris, R-Carrollton, on Monday, Sept. 17, will host a meeting with officials from Isle of Wight County, and Windsor and Smithfield to discuss sharing services to save money.

Morris also in January plans to introduce a bill that would require the state to share the cost with counties to hire a consultant to see what services could possibly be consolidated.

The meeting at 8 a.m. at the Smithfield Center will involve the Board of Supervisors, School Board, and Windsor and Smithfield town councils. The meeting is open to the public.

Al Casteen, chairman for Isle of Wight County Board of Supervisors, is more than willing to listen to Morris’ proposal.

“I think we owe it to our citizens to explore any area,” Casteen said. “I don’t know what we’ll find, but it’s a chance to get together and talk among ourselves.”

He also believes there’s value in encouraging relationships between the governing bodies.

“I hope we can find some areas that we can work together,” Casteen said. “We all have trash we need to take care of. We all have hazardous materials we dispose of and we all have the issue of dealing with a natural event like a hurricane or tornado.”

Southampton County Administrator Mike Johnson believes supervisors would be in favor of consolidating services. A committee with Franklin District Supervisor Barry Porter and Berlin-Ivor District Supervisor Ronnie West recently met with officials in Franklin to discuss the matter.

Morris campaigned and has supported consolidated services since taking office in January 2011.
