FRANKLIN—A Franklin man has been charged with holding up a gas station-convenience store at 1:05 a.m. Monday, Franklin police said.

Jonathan Aaron Olsen, 21, of 640 Cameron St. allegedly entered the Kangaroo Gas Station at 1643 Armory Drive and waited until other customers left the store. He then approached the clerk and grabbed her, placing a screwdriver against her neck, police said.

Olsen then allegedly robbed the store, getting away with an undetermined amount of cash.

Police said they spotted him running across Armory Drive toward McDonald’s and Days Inn. He allegedly refused to stop when ordered. An officer chased him onto the second floor of the Days Inn, where the suspect attempted to escape by climbing onto the roof, police said.

That’s when police took the suspect into custody, recovering the money and the weapon, police said.

Olsen was charged with armed robbery, abduction, petty larceny, resisting arrest, concealing merchandise, assault and battery and drunk in public, and taken to Western Tidewater Regional Jail without bond.

The clerk was not injured.

Police could not say whether or not Olsen may be a suspect in the armed robbery at Golden Skillet on Armory Drive on Aug. 7. The suspect robbed an employee of two deposit bags at gunpoint.

“It’s something we can look at,” said Lt. Tim Whitt. “I don’t know if there is any connection.”
