Indians lose to Packers

SMITHFIELD – The Southampton High School offense sputtered in a 34-7 loss to Smithfield in a non-district contest.

Despite opening the scoring Friday with an 11-yard touchdown by Jerry Wright, the Indians couldn’t keep the Packers out of the end zone.

Smithfield gained 441 yards on offense, of those 294 yards came on the ground against SHS. The Indians gained 68 total yards in the loss.

Southampton went 0-for-9 through the air and had three first downs. The Indians had 33 runs for 68 yards and punted eight times.

With the loss, SHS falls to 0-2 on the season. The Indians take on Franklin in their home opener at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7.
