COURTLAND—A Saturday fire triggered by lightning damaged a utility room and attic, and left smoke damage throughout a home at 22241 Linden St., said Brian Futrell, captain with the Courtland Volunteer Fire Department.

No one was home when the fire ignited at 10:23 a.m. Futrell did not know who lives at the home or who owns it, but said the residents were unable to return. American Red Cross was contacted.

When firefighters arrived, smoke was coming from the attic. It took about 20 minutes to put out the fire, Futrell said. The home was not destroyed.

Hunterdale, Sedley, Boykins, Newsoms and Franklin fire departments assisted.
