Franklin board commended

The Franklin School Board made good decisions Thursday by promoting two of its own to principal positions.

Lisa Francis was named principal of J.P. King Middle School and Travis Felts was named principal of Franklin High School.

We feel Francis, who has been the assistant principal at S.P. Morton Elementary School for five years, is an excellent choice to take over for Angela Byrd-Wright because Francis has 11 years of teaching experience with Franklin’s middle school students.

We also feel her 16 years with the school district means she’ll help bring stability to the job, which has seen three principals in as many years.

We also admire the strength she showed after she was turned down for the principal’s job at S.P. Morton in June.

Felts taught in the district for 11 years before becoming assistant principal at FHS two years ago. He also has strong ties to the area, having played football at FHS from 1987 to 1991. Felts’ appointment should help bring stability to the office after former Principal Dr. Rodney Berry left after two years at the helm.

We commend the district and the board for making these choices quickly, with the school year rapidly approaching.
