Southampton Middle School seventh-grader Aidan Fosser received first-place awards in a math competition.

COURTLAND—Southampton Middle School seventh-grader Aidan Fosser took first in his school and tied for first in the region during the Virginia Mathematics League Contest.

The region included schools from Chesterfield, Gloucester, Hampton, Newport News, Northampton, Poquoson, Hopewell and Suffolk.

Aidan participated in the contest through the Talented and Gifted Program at his school taught by Jane Stephenson.

Aidan took a test published by the national Mathematics League that challenged students with complex, multi-step math word problems considerably above their grade level.

Southampton’s gifted students in fourth through seventh grades participate annually. Trophies were awarded during the recent gifted open house to local first-, second- and third-place winners.
