CAPRON—Stephen Metcalf Jr. of Courtland and Karly Clarke of Emporia won lifetime fishing licenses during the 2012 Fishing Extravaganza for 5- to-13-year-olds at the Southampton Prison Farm near Capron on Saturday.

More than 90 youth turned out for the event hosted by the local 4-H with help from Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.

Joe and Judy Wallower of Franklin took their children, Jacob and Jenna. The youngsters are no strangers to catching big fish. Jacob caught a 2.5-pound catfish and Jenna, a 6-pound bowfin while fishing on nearby rivers.

Karen Watkins from Emporia took three anglers with her to the event. This was Watkins’ third year to attend. Her crew didn’t have much luck, possibly due to the storm that rolled through the area on Friday.

Mike Dunn of Sunbeam brought his two grandchildren, who caught two crappie and a largemouth.

John Rush with the Department of Game said the event couldn’t have been done without community support, including from the state Department of Corrections, Capron Rescue, Poole’s Pen and Walmart.
