COURTLAND—Collin Pulley, who started making deliveries for his parents’ business and worked his way up to general manger, this year marks his 30th anniversary with Nottoway House Furniture near Courtland.

A Courtland native who was raised in Southampton County, Pulley works at the store with his wife, Judy, and five employees.

Established in 1955 by his parents Graham Pulley and the late Clyde Pulley, Nottoway Furniture lies on Highway 58. Graham Pulley remains president, although he is retired.

After graduating from Southampton Academy in 1978, Collin Pulley received a degree in business administration from The College of William & Mary in Williamsburg.

Pulley worked his way up to the sales floor and became the general manager following his parents’ retirement.

The store has faced good and bad times. Pulley believes the most prosperous times were during the late 1980s. The worst have been the past few years due to the struggling economy.

Nottoway House’s clientele comes primarily from Franklin and Southampton County and as far as Richmond and Ahoskie, N.C.

Pulley, 52, plans to remain with the store for at least 20 more years.
