FRANKLIN—A motorist hit and killed a bear on U.S. Highway 58 near the Armory Drive eastbound exit, said Major Gene Drewery with the Southampton County Sheriff’s Office.

Driver Harry Lashley of Virginia Beach was not hurt when he hit the bear in the Cadillac sport utility vehicle he was driving at 4:30 a.m. Saturday. The vehicle could not be driven due to radiator damage, Drewery said.
