There are other ways to cut county budget

To the Editor:

There have been many recent discussions regarding Southampton County’s budget.

How many times has this happened in the past few years? Every time there is a budget shortfall, the county administrator and board use the scare tactic of putting numerous teachers and deputies on the chopping block in hopes of getting the citizens to become comfortable with yet another tax increase.

The fact of the matter is that there are many areas that can be cut without having to eliminate so many positions. After looking at reports and older budgets I have sent Supervisor Barry Porter two e-mails with approximately 12 to 13 areas that need attention without any reply whatsoever.

I am asking all citizens who have ideas to send them to your respective supervisors via mail, email, telephone — whatever it takes. We must let them know that we will not stand for another tax increase.

Each board member needs to dissect previous years’ budgets and reports and dig deep to find the cuts that will minimize job loss but that will also successfully close the gaps.
