FRANKLIN—Southampton Academy’s Barclay Gatten finished the regular tennis season undefeated after beating Blessed Sacrament Huguenot’s top player 6-3 at Cypress Cove Country Club on Wednesday.
The Lady Raiders lost 3-6 to Blessed Sacrament, which is ranked number one in the Virginia Commonwealth Conference. SA finished the regular season 6-4.
“We knew going into the match that it would be a tough one to win,” said SA Coach Joann Gatten. “Our strategy was to play focused and in control, rely on our fundamentals and to keep our unforced errors to a minimum. The girls did a great job following through with the plan, but it was not quite enough.”
Southampton Academy lost to Blessed Sacrament 1-8 earlier in the season.
Lady Raiders Megan Drewry and Rebecca Lewis were honored for Senior Day. Both will attend Longwood University in the fall.
“Their dedication and positive attitudes will be missed next year,” Gatten said. “They have been great role models for the younger girls on the team.”
