CAPRON—A three-week-old and her mother were taken to Southampton Memorial Hospital after the car they were riding in rolled at 8:30 a.m. Thursday on Route 58 near Pope Station Road in Capron, said Virginia State Police Trooper Sterling Johnson.

The infant, Jayahnai Davis, was not hurt, but checked for injuries before being released, Johnson said.

“The mother had the baby properly restrained in the car seat,” Johnson said.

The infant’s mother, Shaakiyla Davis, 19, of Columbus, Ga, was treated and released.

Davis was driving a 2011 Chevrolet Malibu eastbound when she became distracted while talking to her husband, Johnson said.

Both lanes of U.S. 58 were closed for about 10 minutes.
