COURTLAND—Southampton County Planning Commission on Thursday voted unanimously to recommend allowing the construction of a ball field at Fourth Street and Sycamore Avenue in Sedley.

The Board of Supervisors during its 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 29, meeting will decide whether or not to approve the recommendation.

The Sedley Recreation Association would like to buy 2.6 acres across from Hubbard Peanut Co. for $20,000 for a second ball field in town. Rogers Memorial Park has one field.

The property under consideration is zoned for single-family homes. Baseball fields are allowed in those areas with special permission through a conditional-use permit.

Frank and Judy Drake of Columbus, Ohio, own the land.

The association also plans to build dugouts, a parking lot, concessions stand and restrooms, and install lighting and bleachers. Money will need to be raised, but it’s hoped the ball field can be built by fall.

The Rogers Memorial Park has a concession stand, tennis and basketball courts, and playground.

Checks for donations can be made to the association and mailed to P.O. Box 29, Sedley, Va., 23878.
