COURTLAND—Clean Rivers Day 2012 will be held Saturday, April 28, around the Blackwater & Nottoway rivers.

This 11th annual cleanup involves teams and individuals going out on the rivers and streams and in parking lots, picking up litter and other junk. To date, volunteers have removed over 68,000 pounds of trash, said Blackwater Nottoway Riverkeeper Jeff Turner.

“CRD is a great opportunity for folks to contribute to the health of the community we live in,” Turner said. “As always I will have litter getters and bags for those who need them. Teams or individuals can pick their own locations, or I can find you one.”

He suggests starting to look around river and swamp bridge crossings or ditches for cleanup areas.

“Teams can pick what time of day they want to work and how long,” Turner said. “ Teams need to keep count of bag and participant totals, and totals of tires, etc.”

He asks that participants make notes of the most unusual items found and take pictures, which can be sent to Turner at blknotkpr@earthlink.net.
