To the Editor:

It’s time for celebration at Franklin-Southampton Area United Way!

Thanks to our loyal donors, this year United Way awarded grants of $150,000 to 27 local agencies. This is a significant accomplishment, and you made it happen despite a down economy.

Gwen Albers listed the agencies receiving grants in her article in the Friday, March 23 edition. They are very grateful for your support. Last year these agencies provided over 22,000 services to residents of Franklin City and Southampton County.

Many thanks to everyone who helped us have a successful fundraiser with the Harlem Ambassadors Exhibition Basketball Team. We couldn’t have done it without our sponsors, players, coaches, referees, many volunteers and all of you who bought game tickets.

A special thank you to The Tidewater News and WLQM AM/FM for their generous publicity. It was a fun night, and we made a profit of around $5,000. These funds will be used for future grants.

Thank you again for the great community support for United Way.
