COURTLAND—Southampton County supervisors voted 7-0 to seek bids on four vehicles from the Sheriff’s Department.
They include a 1997 Ford Expedition, two 2005 Crown Victorias and a 1984 Chevrolet Army ambulance. All have close to if not more than 200,000 miles and mechanical issues.
“It will cost money to keep them in service,” added Supervisor Chairman Dallas Jones.
Supervisor Glenn Updike suggested scraping the cars for money and selling the tires separately.
The Crown Victorias were patrol cars. Retired Sheriff Vernie Francis purchased the Expedition, which has been handed down for various assignments, including for detectives and as an unmarked unit, said Major Gene Drewery with the Sheriff’s Office.
All vehicles run, some better than others, Drewery said. All are no longer used.
