COURTLAND— Southampton High School scored four first-half goals to defeat Franklin 4-2 in a non-league season opener on Tuesday.

Indians Jannes Bergmann and Jeffrey Vincent scored with headers on two corner kicks by Johhny Tribbett in the first five minutes. Billy Birdsong scored on a rebound off the Franklin goalie. Tribbett scored off a pass from Bergmann.

Franklin scored twice in the second half.

“It was a good performance in the first half, but we played poorly in the second half,” said Southampton Coach Scott Edwards. “We made way too many mistakes in the second half and were unable to get shots on target.”

In junior varsity action, Gavin Thompson scored three goals to lead Southampton to a 5-2 win over Franklin.

Mary Hudgins had a goal and an assist for the Indians. Clayton Turner scored the other goal.
