WALTERS—A Walters company that trains military and police dogs plans to buy five acres for $89,000 from Isle of Wight County.
American K-9 Interdiction will have a public hearing before the Board of Supervisors on the matter at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 15, at the Isle of Wight Courthouse.
The county purchased the land at 4043 Burdette Road from the Virginia Department of Transportation for $89,000, said County Attorney Mark Popovich. It borders American K9 headquarters at the former minimum security prison and juvenile boot camp.
American K-9 President Paul Roushia said the company would renovate buildings on the property for police dog training.
“It’s a win-win,” Roushia said. “We’re taking this property that laid dormant, and we’re putting new life into it. We’ve been good corporate neighbors. The property won’t be such an eyesore.”
Roushia said he doesn’t how much money will be invested in the property. The company is interested in the property so it doesn’t have to lease land for training.
