SEDLEY—Shortly after 9 p.m. Sunday, a 49-year-old man who held police at bay for five hours walked out of his home for a peaceful end to what was initially reported as a domestic situation, said Southampton County Sheriff Chief Deputy Gene Drewery.

Authorities did not identify the man, but said he will be sent for a mental health evaluation.

The sheriff’s office at 4 p.m. was called to the home on Peachtree Avenue at Rosemont Road across from Rosemont Cemetery. About an hour later, a woman described as the man’s wife came out.

Police at about 8:30 p.m. used tear gas to get the man to come outside, Drewery said.

No one was hurt.
