COURTLAND—Southampton High School’s wrestling team defeated visiting Franklin 48-29 during the annual daytime match in front of the student body.

The five Indians who pinned Franklin wrestlers were Tim Mason at 138 pounds, French foreign exchange student Frank LeMat at 145, DaQuan Cotton at 152, Sam McDonald at 182 and KaMontae Blunt at heavyweight.

Other winners by decisions were brothers SeQuan and Devine Fenter, at 120 and 132 pounds, respectively, and Dustin Corbin at 220.

First-year Southampton Head Coach William “Buddy” Whitehurst expects a competitive year as long as his wrestlers can make weight.

“They’re training real hard to lose weight and stay in shape,” said Whitehurst, who replaced Vernon Bryant at the helm. “We’ve got three or four moves we can rely on so we should be competitive. We’ve got some pretty tough guys.”

The win improves Southampton’s record to 3-3.

The Indians will travel to Sussex for a 5 p.m. match on Wednesday, Jan. 4.
