To the editor:

Our professional relationship started at the Basic Police Academy when we both began our careers in law enforcement. I later would have the honor of serving as a Smithfield police officer under the leadership of Chief Marshall.

Over the years, I have witnessed the Smithfield Police Department transform from a small town police department to a modern, accredited agency that has become nationally recognized.

Chief Marshall’s dedication to the community and strong work ethic has built a professional law enforcement department second to none. He inspires and expects excellence in law enforcement by promoting continuing education, high ethics and executive leadership training.

Chief Marshall cares about the citizens of Isle of Wight County. On numerous occasions I have known him to give to those that were in need, without seeking recognition.

I myself was the recipient of his kindness and generous giving. In 2009, I had an organ transplant and upon learning that my sick leave was expiring, Chief Marshall transferred a portion of his personal sick leave to ensure my benefits would continue. This type of compassion transcends throughout his professional and personal life.

In past elections the call was for leadership change in the Isle of Wight County Sheriff’s office. I am certain that Mark Marshall will bring the change that is needed to ensure all the citizens of Isle of Wight excellence in law enforcement.

On Nov. 8, I encourage all those who voted for change then to now cast their votes for Mark Marshall for Sheriff of Isle of Wight County.
