To the Editor:

As we approach the November election, I reflect on the position of our county and the fact that there are four challengers who believe, as I do, it is time for a major change.

These are brave, committed and highly-qualified individuals who have made their positions crystal clear in the Southampton County Board of Supervisors candidate debate. They recognize that we are significantly in debt due to extravagant spending by current members of the board.

For my part, examples are spending on lavish schools, county and school employee compensation and benefits and industrial tracts that will likely never come to fruition.

There are only four challengers: Glenn Updike, Newsoms District; Allen Edwards, Jerusalem District; Bruce Phillips, Capron District; and Barry Porter, Franklin District.

But it’s a start. I urge you to support these individuals for responsible county government.
